How to Make Elderberry Syrup: A Natural Immune Booster for Cold and Flu Season

Updated: Nov 3, 2024

As the winter season progresses, I love to have elderberry syrup in stock.

Elderberry is a popular homeopathic remedy for the cold and flu season because of its benefits to boost immunity, fight infection and inflammation, combat inflammation, in addition to many other health benefits. I used to frequent farmer's maarkets to buy elderberry syrup when I came to the realization that I can make my own. There are tons of recipes for elderberry syrup, but this version is what I found works best for me. It is easy to make and not overly sweet. So, I wanted to share!

What do you need to make elderberry syrup?

To make this elderberry syrup, you will need dried elderberries, cinnamon, cloves, raw and unfiltered honey, and water.

Dried Elderberries.

I buy my dried elderberried from Amazon of course! They are organic and a great value for the price. I like this brand. It is important to note that elderberries should not be consumed raw. Also, discard berries once the syrup is completed.

Cinnamon and Cloves.

I use organic ground seasonings. I haven't tried it with fresh cinnamon sticks and cloves, but I think it would be just as good if not better.

Raw and unfiltered honey.

We get raw honey from a bee farmer, but you can also purchase raw and unfiltered honey in the grocery store. Farmer's markets are also a great place to find honey vendors. If you are looking for a vegan version, wildflower honey and agave are great substitutes for the honey.
